Peru : Updates

The full report card data collection is untaken once a year. This page therefore records significant changes in transparency, and new publications from the forest and other authorities in Perú during the year.

2010 is expected to see the approval of a new forest law, which is one of the commitments undertaken by the country as part of the US-Perú Free Trade Agreement. This has included, for the first time in Perú, the official establishment of an indigenous peoples' led roundtable to provide its own analysis and input. The work of the roundtable has recently resulted in a report which contributes its views on what the new law should contain. This has been presented to the Peruvian government and it is expected to constitute a core input so as to achieve a legal framework that is equitable and addresses the needs of forest-dependent peoples, hitherto largely ignored.

It is also expected that the recent institutional changes, which have seen the cessation of INRENA, the former forest authority, and creation of a new Ministry of the Environment, will continue to be consolidated. This is essential for transparency as institutional instability has hindered access to information throughout 2009.
