Liberia : Updates

The full report card data collection is untaken once a year. This page therefore records significant changes in transparency, and new publications from the forest and other authorities in Liberia during the year.

2010 is expected to be the first year of significant forest operations since the post-civil war suspension of logging activities in 2006. A relatively strong legal framework is in place and provides for significant transparency, but weak forestry institutions and fragile post-war politics are undermining its implementation.

Therefore this year may see Liberia show it is ready to see a new paradigm for forests, particularly as they become recognised as critical to mitigating climate change, or a return to 'business as usual' with disastrous consequences. The ability of the public to hold government to account will be crucial to the outcome.
