Extra-sectoral activities affecting forests

Are decisions about extra-sectoral operations - such as mining, road building, large-scale agriculture, hydropower or other infrastructure projects - transparent? What transparency rules apply to these? Are there extra-sectoral threats to the forest? How?

The Government of Liberia has issued several large-scale mining and monoculture agricultural concessions. Some of these concessions are situated in or close proximity to areas considered significant for biodiversity conservation. The large-scale agricultural concessions will particular intensify conversion of natural forests and deforestation.

Is there a strategic process to assess priorities between development options?

A Strategic Environmental Assessment was conducted in 2008/09 but the results have been shelved since then. The National Forest Policy does not address the issue of competing land uses. Read more...
