In 2010, Ghana is expected to complete the implementation process of a Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the EU which came into force on 20 November 2009. Thus the first licensed legal timber will be reaching Europe in December 2010.
The government of Ghana has committed to a series of legal reforms in order to put in place the legality licensing system and to address a number of governance issues in the sector. Civil society expects greater access to information on the sector, greater participation in the legislative reform, and a stronger say in the management of local forests to be the result of these reforms.
